A lot of people assume that you don’t need to make an effort to keep their dog healthy because surely they just do that themselves.
But think about it – if you don’t regularly take your companion out, they’ll get lazy and overweight just like we do.
So keep active together – it is with your best friend after all. Who better to stay in shape with than your dog?
Here are a couple examples of how you can do so.
WATCH WHAT THEY EAT
If your dog is like most other canines out there, if there is any food left out – regardless of what it is – they will gobble it up within no time.
Because of this, it’s very important that you look at what you’re feeding them and how much. Just like us, if you give them naughty snacks throughout the day – they’ll gain weight.
Another problem with giving them snacks is that sometimes it’s easy to lose count of how many treats they’ve had.
One good idea to manage this is putting out all the treats they can have within a day, and that way when they’re gone – they’re gone.
Also, when putting their food down for them, measure it out so you know exactly how much they’re eating every day.
You can do this by using the same plastic container or scoop each time. Another benefit of doing this is that if ever they fall ill and lose their appetite, you’ll know exactly how much food they have left.
YOUR CHUBBY CHUM
If your dog is slightly overweight already – no need to worry. You will just have to really keep an eye on how often you’re taking them out, as they may need more walks than they would normally have.
One great accessory that you can invest in is a weighted dog vest. You put these on your dog just like you would a harness, but these have weights inside so it’s a little bit heavy.
This weighted dog vest is essentially the same thing we do when we go to the gym or for a run, and we wrap little weights around our ankles. It just makes the action a bit more demanding so that your dog is getting more of a workout.
Don’t worry about your dog’s comfort though, as these are designed to fit securely without rubbing on the fur and skin. The weights are made from sandbags, so they mold to your buddies unique body, and are put in specific locations so they don’t hurt or irritate any areas.
WHY YOUR DOG’S WEIGHT REALLY MATTERS
These are the two main factors to focus on in order to make sure that your dog is a fit and healthy one.
Believe it or not, but over 50% of dogs are obese in the country.
And in a lot of cases, this can lead to them having some serious problems with their heart, or diabetes, or other health concerns with their joints and movement.
A misconception is that giving your dog whatever they want is a sign of love. But when you see a fat dog barely able to walk or breathe properly, that isn’t love – that’s abuse. So don’t fall into the trap.
